About The Modern Shaker

Why The Modern Shaker?

Here in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, we have several former Shaker communities in our area. As I've spent time studying their life philosophy, their community culture, and their design aesthetic, I've come to see that they embodied much of what I appreciate today.

According to my definition, a Modern Shaker is the person in today's world who values faith, community, beauty, simplicity, excellence, and natural materials and surroundings. It is someone who brings forward the best of the past and is highly thoughtful about adopting any innovations of the future. I aspire to be a Modern Shaker!

About Us

Mickey and I met our first week of college in our freshman dorm at Stanford in the fall of 1997. We secretly eloped our sophomore year and have been on one crazy adventure after the next! While my career path was toward law, my true passion was for houses and family. In our 27 years together, we've lived in many different homes: an Eichler-style garage in Palo Alto, Ca., a '60s ranch house in Dallas, Tx., a pre-war high-rise in Manhattan, a Victorian townhouse in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and since 2012, various old farmhouses around the Berkshires. We also have six kids, ranging in ages from 2 to 22!

The Modern Shaker blog features our latest house adventure, most recently the new home we just built with high school and college kids!
